Cloud Migration 2.0: Moving your ERP System to the Cloud with Colt Technology Services' Keri Gilder

More businesses are moving business-critical systems and workloads into the cloud – in our recent research, 96% of senior IT decision-makers said they were either quietly confident or fully on board with moving these applications and services to the cloud. Many are adopting a cloud-first or cloud-native strategy, with respondents in RightScale’s 2019 State of the Cloud report indicating that enterprises run 79% of workloads in the cloud. This is one of the quickest growing segments of cloud adoption and is being driven by the big players in the industry. SAP are encouraging users of their suite of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) applications into the cloud. Oracle has also taken the plunge, committed to driving customers onto Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI). These are typically giant applications with masses of data and, by migrating to the cloud, businesses can take advantage of flexibility, scalability, productivity, and advanced features, while reducing the need for on-premise equipment. In fact, nearly 70% of enterprise organisations are in the process of migrating their ERP systems to the cloud, according to the Cloud Security Alliance.With so many pieces in an ERP migration, connectivity is often thought about late in the game, despite having a huge impact on the whole project. The later it gets considered, the greater the risks and the more likely it is that the entire project may be delayed or over budget. Different types of connectivity are better suited for each stage of a migration. At the start of a migration, quickly-provisioned high bandwidth connectivity is essential for moving the giant databases. Once in the ‘stay state’, bandwidth can be scaled down to a more cost-effective level that still maintains application performance. For other future migration projects, that same flexible and scalable bandwidth can be ramped up. Connectivity also plays a big part in the performance of business-critical applications. High bandwidth is needed to transfer data rapidly, latency should also be considered otherwise users can experience usability issues that could prove costly. With ERP migrations, flexible, high bandwidth and low latency connectivity from all branch sites and back to the cloud needs to be considered from day one. To further reduce risk and improve security, private, dedicated connectivity is a valuable option as traffic won’t become separated or isolated in designated paths, which can decrease exposure to DDoS attacks. Dedicated, flexible, and low latency connectivity should be considered from the outset to reduce risk, manage timescales and to help make the migration a success.
