Market Highlight: Colocation Data Centers In Frankfurt

Germany’s financial capital, Frankfurt, is not only an alpha world city and an important European gateway for global trading, it’s a digital behemoth with one of the most dense data networks in the world. Frankfurt boasts the lowest latency connection compared to many of its neighbors and acts as the primary trading hub for Germany's main trading venues.Ranked #3 in Cloudscene’s 2017 Global Colocation Ecosystems ranking, Frankfurt has 96 data centers, over 500 service providers and is home to the world's largest internet exchange point - DE-CIX.Germany itself is the third largest data center market in the world boasting over 400 facilities, following the United States and the United Kingdom.Frankfurt’s data center sector has a powerful networking presence, particularly to the east and west of the central business district and a recent report indicated that Frankfurt achieved a staggering 3.2MW of data center power demand in the first quarter of this year.Equinix, Interxion and Global Switch are the dominant data center operators based on the connectivity of their respective data center facilities located in the city. The ecosystem-style ranking is unique to Cloudscene’s data and calculated based on the number of known service providers and PoPs in each facility. Frankfurt's data center market is rarely out of the headlines. Just this month Interxion announced that it would be investing €211m to expand its European presence with 123,000 sqf of new data center space in both Frankfurt and Marseille.“Interxion’s Frankfurt campus is one of the largest internet hubs in Europe. Demand for our services in Frankfurt continues to outpace supply, and we are expanding our campus to meet our customers’ growing needs,” said David Ruberg, Interxion’s CEO.Last month, managed cloud firm, Rackspace, opened its first German data center in central Frankfurt to allow the company to serve customers in Germany, Austria and Switzerland whilst ensuring it can comply with German and Swiss data protection regulation.Equinix also increased its capacity in Frankfurt with the opening of its 12th data center in the city in June and data center consultancy, Zenium, broke ground on its second data center facility in April.Want to find out more about colocation data centers in your market?
